Baek, Sung-Kyun


Apparently his works remind us of Susumi Sinku's environmental sculptures. For they have similarities with those of Calder and Sinku in the fact they are Non-motored kinetic works and that they are well adapted to environment.
The difference, however, between baek and the other two is that he changes natural creatures into mechanical forms and re-turns them into environment(nature).
For example, though the animals such as bird, penguin, bug, hornet, cock, and Butterfly are made of industrial materials and machines, they make us feel that their form and movement are well controlled to a degree to give a poetic impression.
Here are the possibilities of the humanization and naturalization of technolohy, and the reconciliation and harmony between technolohy and nature, and thus between culture and cultivation.
